Model 1500 Installation & Operating Instructions

Set-Up

Step 1: Accurately position the boring bar

  • Slide the boring bar through the work and the centering cones.
  • Slide the centering cones along the boring bar into the existing bores, then lock in position by tightening the setscrews in the cones.
Step 2: Attach BoreMaster to the work
  • For bores 4.0" in diameter and smaller attach stand-off legs directly to the axial feed head. For bores larger than 4.0" or if a wider span is required, attach the optional feed head adaptor plate between the axial feed head and stand-off legs.
  • Attach stand-off legs and tail bearing to tail bearing adaptor.
  • Slide the axial feed head and tail bearing assembly over the bar until the stand-off legs contact the work. Weld or clamp stand-offs to work.
Step 3: Start boring
  • Slip the boring bar out of setup far enough to remove the centering cones. Then slide bar back into setup and attach hand drill. The system is now ready for operation.

Operation

Step 1: Set the axial feed head to bore in the proper direction

  • Lock the boring bar to axial feed assembly by tightening setscrew.
  • Attach electric drill to end of bar.
  • Set spindle to either travel limit (scribed lines on spindle). Clockwise rotation will feed forward. Counter clockwise will feed in reverse.
Step 2: Set cutting tool
  • Unlock the boring bar from the axial feed assembly. You should now be able to manually slide the boring bar back and forth.
  • Insert a sharp cutting tool. Manually slide the boring bar into the bore until the cutting tool is just inside the bore. Then slide the cutting tool out until it touches the surface to be machined. Tighten the cutting tool in this position.
  • Manually slide the boring bar out until the cutting tool is out of the bore. Set tool to proper cutting radius.
  • Manually slide the boring bar to a position where it is just about to enter the work.
  • Lock the boring bar to the axial feed head by tightening the setscrew.
Step 3: Bore
  • Make sure the drill is rotating in the proper direction. Clockwise rotation will feed forward, counter clockwise will feed in reverse.
  • Turn on electric drill and bore the hole. Do not push on the drill; the boring bar will automatically feed into the work.
  • To reposition the cutting tool to take another pass, unlock the boring bar from the axial feed head and manually slide it in the opposite direction of the cut until the tool is clear of the bore. Once the tool is clear, relock the boring bar to the axial feed head.
  • Change the rotational direction of the drill and rotate the boring bar in the opposite direction until you reset the axial feed head to the original limit line.
  • Repeat Steps 2 & 3 until the desired bore size is obtained.

Procedure for boring holes longer than 2.0" in length

Follow standard operating procedures up to resetting the cutting tool for another pass. Once you have reset the axial feed head to the original limit line, do the following:
  • Unlock the boring bar from the axial feed head. Manually slide the boring bar into the bore until you can not feed it any further.
  • Manually slide the boring bar out of the bore approximately 1/16".
  • Lock the boring bar to the axial feed head by tightening the setscrew.
  • Follow standard operating procedure Step 3.
